A minimoon is a short honeymoon, usually three to five nights, taken soon after the wedding and usually close to home. Often a longer trip follows months later. It isn’t a lesser honeymoon. For many couples it’s the better first trip: rest straight after the wedding, without the jet lag and logistics of a long haul.

Part 2
When a minimoon makes more sense
Leave is short, or the wedding used most of it.
The dream destination is out of season on your wedding date. Every destination page rates each month, so check before you book the dream on the wrong dates.
The wedding took the budget. A minimoon now and the big trip once you’ve saved beats a stretched trip now.
You’re exhausted. Three quiet nights can do more good than a long-haul flight two days after the wedding.
Visas take time. If the dream needs an embassy visa you haven’t got, go somewhere easy first.
Part 3
How far is too far?
The test is how much of the trip you spend travelling. A long journey each way can easily take a sixth of a short trip or more:

Keeping each way under about five hours, door to door, keeps the trip about the trip. The minimoon finder below filters by exactly that.
Part 4
Places that work in three or four nights
These destinations don’t need a long stay to feel complete, and have no complicated last leg:
What counts as close depends on where you live. The country hubs list short-flight options with no embassy visa, for example from India, the UK, the USA and Australia.
Part 5
The best minimoon places by season
A minimoon has no room for a washed-out day, so the month matters even more than on a long trip. From ten years of weather data, the short-stay places at their best in each season:
Because the trip is short, a minimoon is the time to spend on the room. Four splurge nights often cost less than a week at comfort level somewhere far away.

Part 9
A three-night minimoon, planned
Short trips go best with one base and very little to organise. A shape that works almost anywhere:
Day
Plan
Day 1
Travel in the morning, check in early if you can, long lunch, nothing else
Day 2
Sleep in, one experience (a boat, a walk, a spa), the special dinner
Day 3
Free day: the pool, the beach, the town
Day 4
Breakfast in bed, late check-out, travel home
Stay in one place. Moving hotels on a short trip costs half a day.
Ask for a late check-out when you book, and tell them it’s your honeymoon.
Go straight after the wedding, or a few days later if you’re exhausted. A gap lets you recover first, and lets out-of-town guests leave.
Part 10
Pack light
A minimoon is the perfect trip for hand luggage only: no waiting at the carousel, no lost bags and an easy last day. Two swimsuits or two warm layers, one outfit for the special dinner, comfortable shoes and the rest you can wash in the sink. The packing list builds one for the destination and month.
Part 11
Doing both: minimoon now, honeymoon later
If you plan both, decide the big trip first: pick it for its best month, not for a date that happens to be free. Then the minimoon fills the gap. Split the budget so the minimoon is one lovely hotel and the rest goes to the big trip, where flights cost most.
The Matchmaker’s minimoon mode favours short flights and four nights; use the finder below to see what fits from your city.

Questions couples ask
Quick answers
What is a minimoon?
A short honeymoon, usually three to five nights close to home, taken right after the wedding. Often a longer trip follows later.
Why do couples choose a minimoon?
Limited leave, a wedding that took the budget, the wrong season for the dream destination, or simply wanting rest before a big trip.
How far should we travel for a minimoon?
Keep the flight to about five hours or less, so you don’t spend a quarter of the trip in transit.
