The good 8
Romance & privacyAlong the Seine
Jet lag turned into their favourite memory: up at 5 or 6 am, walking empty streets along the Seine, then the first croissant from a café just opening.
“A quiet, serene Paris, just waking up, was lovely.”

Things to doEiffel Tower
They timed an evening river boat to reach the foot of the Eiffel Tower on the hour, just as it began to sparkle.
“Stepped onto the dock at 9:00, and the lights went nuts (on the tower) above our heads.”
Couple · Fodor’s forum · Aug 2024 · Read the original
Things to doEiffel Tower
Go up the Eiffel Tower after dark, when the lights sparkle on the hour; they found it uncrowded at night. Monet's water lilies at the Orangerie take little time and are unforgettable.
“I think going up the Eiffel Tower at night is more special than during the day”
Couple · Fodor’s forum · Aug 2024 · Read the original
Things to doPalais Royal
A rainy-day plan: walk from the Tuileries to the Palais Royal and into the glass-roofed covered passages, such as Galerie Vivienne and Passage Jouffroy. Then coffee by the Canal Saint-Martin.
“The passages are an especially good option for a rainy day.”
Couple · Fodor’s forum · Aug 2024 · Read the original
Food & drinkEiffel Tower
Of all their meals, the one they still talk about was dinner inside the Eiffel Tower at 58 Tour Eiffel, the cheaper of its two restaurants. Book well ahead and dress up a little.
“We had wonderful meals in Paris but the one we always remember was at the 58 Tour Eiffel in the Eiffel Tower.”
Couple · Rick Steves forum · Jun 2021 · Read the original
WeatherLe Marais
Winter works: this repeat visitor enjoyed January as much as spring. Pack a raincoat and waterproof shoes, and stay in the Marais for cafés, cobbled streets and walks to the river.
“I’ve been to Paris in the dead of winter and enjoyed the city in January as much as my stays in April and May.”
Repeat visitor · Rick Steves forum · Jun 2021 · Read the original
Where they stayedLatin Quarter
A small Latin Quarter hotel with a room that was spacious by Paris standards, a generous breakfast and a team they called 'a gem'.
“The location is everything... this place and the people are a gem.”
Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Jul 2018 · Read the original
Value for moneySaint-Germain-des-Prés
Ten nights for two in a 4-star Saint-Germain hotel for about $1,435, booked prepaid for March. A Navigo transport pass and a Museum Pass kept other costs down. Their warning: you'll spend more on food than you plan.
“we were able to stay at Artus Hotel (4*) for 10 nights at $1,434.90 prepaid via hotels.com.”
Couple · Rick Steves forum · Mar 2017 · Read the original
The bad 4
Value for moneySentier
Paris rooms are small even at the top end. For over $800 a night they got a cramped room, weekend noise from the courtyard, and a food credit that didn't cover breakfast.
“The room itself was incredibly small and underwhelming.”
Tripadvisor review · Feb 2025 · Read the original
Where they stayed
They booked the hotel's 'best room' two months ahead for the honeymoon, and the day before check-in they were moved to a lesser one. Get room promises in writing, and have a plan B.
“in less than 24 hours I was relocated to an inferior room”
Honeymooner · Tripadvisor review · Sep 2024 · Read the original
SafetyCDG airport train
Pickpockets work the airport train. One grabbed a wallet as the RER doors opened at Charles de Gaulle and was caught only because the doors closed on him.
“Pickpockets are active at the train station at Charles de Gaulle airport”
Family · Tripadvisor review · Jun 2024 · Read the original
Where they stayedLe Marais
A famous hotel on the Place des Vosges let them down: a small room and a quiet, lonely feel.
“It was beautiful, but boring.”
