The good 7
CultureAkrotiri
A day with a private driver took in the lighthouse, the Bronze Age town of Akrotiri buried by the eruption, a cave village, the black-sand beach and a fish taverna.
“I preferred Akrotiri to Pompeii”

Value for money
On a second honeymoon they found a traditional cave house with the same caldera view for far less than the famous hotels. They added a lunch-and-snorkel cruise and a wine tasting, then moved on to quieter Naxos.
“There is absolutely no need to spend $600 per night for a perfect view in Santorini.”
Couple, second honeymoon · Rick Steves forum · Dec 2024 · Read the original
Food & drinkExo Gonia
The best meal of their trip was away from the caldera, at a new restaurant in an inland village that grows its own vegetables. They called the prices very reasonable.
“The best food by far that we had was at a very new restaurant called Sanafi.”
Couple · Rick Steves forum · Aug 2024 · Read the original
Peace & quietOia
Check the cruise-ship schedule. They went to Oia early on a day with no ships in port and had it nearly to themselves, and saved the busy days for a catamaran trip.
“We visited early in the day, before 9:00 a.m. and had much of the town to ourselves.”
Couple · Rick Steves forum · May 2024 · Read the original
Scenery & beachesAkrotiri
A quieter hotel at the southern end of the island, with sunbeds always free and few children, and staff who helped them hire a quad to explore.
“Santorini is truly beautiful and somewhere we’ll cherish forever.”
Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Aug 2023 · Read the original
Things to doAmmoudi Bay
A small-group sunset sail from Ammoudi Bay below Oia: swim stops, the warm sulphur springs, dinner on board, then the sunset from the water, away from the crowds on the cliffs.
“We booked a small group sunset boat tour with Barbarossa Sailing from Ammoudi Bay.”
Two couples · Fodor’s forum · Sep 2022 · Read the original
Where they stayedImerovigli
They turned down a free upgrade to the honeymoon suite to keep their original room, because it had what they came for: the caldera from the balcony and a private roof terrace. They warn that cliffside hotels mean steps, 82 of them from their room to the path.
“perfect view over the caldera from both balcony and our private roof top terrace”
Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Jul 2016 · Read the original
The bad 6
Crowds & noiseOia
Oia was pleasant until two cruise ships unloaded. Walking back that evening, they passed a queue of cruise passengers about a kilometre long, waiting in the rain to get back to their ships.
“vast numbers of people with headsets and numbered stickers on their lapels simply took over the village”
Couple · Rick Steves forum · Oct 2025 · Read the original
Value for moneyFira
A caldera-view restaurant that turned out to be average, with every bottle of red overpriced and served straight from the fridge. Even a burger cost three times what they'd pay at home.
“It cost three times what we’d normally pay, but that’s the price of Santorini it seems.”
Couple · Rick Steves forum · Oct 2025 · Read the original
WeatherFirostefani
In late October they got cloud and rain on two of their three days, and no sunset from the hot-tub terrace they had booked for it.
“The only negative is that it is cloudy, so no sunset but it is still spectacular.”
Couple · Rick Steves forum · Oct 2025 · Read the original
Crowds & noiseFira and Oia
After five weeks around Greece, Santorini was their least favourite stop. One day eight cruise ships brought more than 10,000 passengers, the paths were littered, and the buses were standing room only.
“over hyped, over crowded and over priced”
Couple · Tripadvisor forum · Jun 2022 · Read the original
Touts & scamsOia
In late May they found overpriced transfers from the port, taxis that wouldn't use the meter, and a chaotic airport. The famous views were crowded with selfie-takers and wedding shoots.
“not a single taxi is legitimate and refuses to charge by the meter”
Tripadvisor forum · May 2018 · Read the original
Scenery & beachesPyrgos
In the first week of June they found the island hot, still and packed, and the famous sunset a let-down.
“We saw a better sunset flying out of JFK on the way home.”

Plugs, tipping, water and phones in Greece
- Plugs and voltage
- Type C, F · 230 V / 50 Hz
- Tap water
- Depends where. Safe in Athens and on most mainland towns; many islands have brackish tap water, so locals drink bottled.
- Tipping
- Service is usually included; leave 5–10% or round up for good service.
- Phone and eSIM
- Cosmote, Vodafone, Nova. EU/EEA roaming plans work here at home rates; non-EU phones: buy a local or regional eSIM.
- Money (EUR)
- Euro. Cards are widely taken, but small island tavernas and beach bars may prefer cash.
- Emergency numbers
- 112 · Police 100 · Ambulance 166 · Fire 199
