The good 5
Romance & privacyNungwi
A beachfront room in a small hotel, so there was never a fight for sunbeds. Staff set up a surprise dinner under the stars with a palm arch, and the Maasai staff taught them traditional dances.
“The staff put on a surprise romantic meal for us one night to celebrate our honeymoon”
Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Jul 2024 · Read the original
Scenery & beachesNungwi
An ocean-front cottage with sunsets over the water and the clearest swimming they'd had. The hotel's private beach area kept vendors away, and the ones on the public beach were polite.
“the vendors are respectful and rarely bother you if you kindly decline”

Things to doKendwa
Seven nights after a safari on a soft white-sand beach in Kendwa, with plenty of sunbeds. A morning spice-garden tour and free yoga were highlights, though loud music from nearby kept them awake the first nights.
“The beach! It really is as stunning as it looks in the pictures; soft white sand and Turquoise water.”
Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Jun 2024 · Read the original
Romance & privacyKiwengwa
After their safari, a beach villa on the east coast: watching the sunrise and the tide go out from bed, a lobster dinner, and a staff member who took them to spot bush babies at night.
“waking up watching the sunrise and tide coming in and out”
Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Feb 2024 · Read the original
Peace & quietPaje
Having split eight days between Nungwi, Paje and Stone Town, they'd give Paje more time: cheaper, breezier and more relaxed, with kite-surfers and evening football on the beach.
“Less touristy and we could walk for miles on the beach.”

The bad 5
HealthNungwi
On the first night of their honeymoon, a bad prawn left the husband sicker than she had ever seen anyone. They avoided seafood for the rest of the week.
“my husband was the most sick I’ve ever seen a person be on our first night here”
Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Jul 2024 · Read the original
WeatherNungwi
The same beach changes with the season. December was smooth white sand. In July it was churned-up yellow sand and seaweed, with hotels built out into the water.
“in July Nungwi beach wasn't one smooth stretch of flat white sand, rather it was washed up deep yellowish sand, mixed up with seaweed”
Tripadvisor review · Jun 2020 · Read the original
Touts & scamsKendwa
After a safari they had four beach days in Kendwa, where touts at the hotel's beach kept most guests out of the water. A day in Stone Town and a spice-plantation tour were the better part.
“the local young men (beach boys) who harass every tourist trying to go to the beach”
Couple · Tripadvisor review · Jun 2019 · Read the original
Touts & scamsNungwi
It's one of the world's great beaches at high tide, but aggressive touts, the 'beach boys', spoiled it.
“These guys are brutal! We were hassled by them every 5 minutes.”
Couple · Tripadvisor review · Feb 2018 · Read the original
Scenery & beachesMatemwe
On the east coast the sea goes far out at low tide, leaving seaweed and sea urchins. Bring water shoes, or time your swims for high tide.
“if you want to enter the sea it is full of seaweed and sea urchins, mostly at low tide”

Plugs, tipping, water and phones in Tanzania
- Plugs and voltage
- Type D, G · 230 V / 50 Hz
- Tap water
- Use bottled or filtered. Drink bottled or filtered water. Safari lodges supply it.
- Tipping
- Tipping is part of the safari economy. A common guide is roughly US$15–25 per day per party for the driver-guide, and a smaller shared tip for camp staff. Ask your operator for their guidance.
- Phone and eSIM
- Vodacom, Airtel and Tigo/Yas sell tourist SIMs; coverage is good in Zanzibar and patchy in national parks.
- Money (TZS)
- Tanzanian shilling (TZS). Tourist prices are in US dollars; notes printed before 2013 are often refused, so bring newer ones.
- Emergency numbers
- Police 112 or 999 · Ambulance 114. On safari, your lodge radios the flying doctors.
