The good 5

  • Things to doAirlie Beach

Based in Airlie Beach, which they found a cute town, a visitor went snorkelling in a stunning setting. They suggest a boat ride even for anyone who won't snorkel.

“We stayed in Airlie Beach and went snorkeling in the most stunning setting.”

Rick Steves forum · Jun 2025 · Read the original

  • Things to doHamilton Island

A family flew by helicopter out to snorkel on the outer reef and took a catamaran to Whitehaven, getting around Hamilton Island by private buggy, with wallabies and cockatoos for company.

“Helicopter above the Great Barrier Reef to snorkel at the actual reef has been one of our family’s most memorable experiences.”

Family · Tripadvisor review · Apr 2019 · Read the original

  • Romance & privacyHamilton Island

Three weeks after a cyclone, their beachfront honeymoon room looked untouched. They slept with the doors open to the sound of the waves, and staff left champagne.

“we could keep the doors open all night and listen to the sound of the waves as we slept”

Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Mar 2017 · Read the original

  • Things to doWhitehaven Beach

Even on a wet, stinger-filled day at Whitehaven, the beach was amazing, and a huge sea turtle made the trip.

“Obviously, the beach is amazing going on for miles!”

  • Where they stayedHamilton Island

Annual visitors' advice: Airlie Beach is a backpacker town and its reef trips mean long boat rides and taking turns to snorkel. Stay on Hamilton Island and take a Whitehaven and reef day trip from there.

“Hamilton Island is nice and so much more to do.”

Couple, annual visitors · Tripadvisor forum · Nov 2016 · Read the original

The bad 5

  • Things to doWhitehaven Beach

Strong northerlies (about 10% of days, the crew said) meant their boat couldn't land at Whitehaven, the reason they had booked. They were told within an hour of leaving.

“due to strong northerly winds, there was a chance we may not make it onto Whitehaven Beach”

Tripadvisor review · Oct 2023 · Read the original

  • WeatherWhitsunday Islands

A three-day sailing trip in wind and rain never reached Whitehaven at all, and the crew had no real plan B.

“Due to the boats conditions we were not able to go to the whitehaven beach (everyone’s main reason to go on the boat trip) any of the 3 days.”

Tripadvisor review · Apr 2023 · Read the original

  • WeatherWhitehaven Beach

Day cruises sail in bad weather, and you only get a refund if you cancel 48 hours ahead. Theirs went out in wind, rough seas and constant rain, and Whitehaven has almost no shelter. If the forecast is poor three days out, cancel.

“If the weather forecast isn’t good 3 days out - don’t take the risk”

Tripadvisor review · Jun 2022 · Read the original

  • Hotel serviceHamilton Island

On their third stay at a top Hamilton Island resort, regulars noticed frequent staff turnover and sometimes felt rushed at dinner. They still booked again.

“A couple of times we felt rushed when dining which was at odds with the relaxed feel of being in a resort.”

Repeat visitors · Tripadvisor review · Sep 2019 · Read the original

  • Scenery & beachesWhitehaven Beach

In heavy rain, with the water full of stingers, they stayed out of the sea altogether.

“the weather was awful as it was heavy rain & the sea full of stingers which we chose not tempt!”
