The good 7
Peace & quietPraslin
Repeat visitors who stayed 11 nights on La Digue the first time now skip it for Praslin, and say Mahé's south and west are just as beautiful, only more developed.
“Praslin is also our favorite, by far the quietest and least crowded.”
Couple, repeat visitors · Tripadvisor forum · Dec 2022 · Read the original
Peace & quietMahé
Mahé gets written off as the least pretty island, but this couple found its most secluded beaches.
“we found gorgeous secluded beaches there, moreso than on Praslin and La Digue”
Couple · Tripadvisor forum · Dec 2022 · Read the original
Scenery & beachesPraslin
After two weeks on three islands, Praslin was the favourite: the forest, and days spent swimming at Anse Lazio on the west end. A hire car on Praslin and Mahé made exploring easy.
“By far our favourite island was Praslin we loved the vegetation and the beaches it was breath taking.”
Family · Tripadvisor forum · Aug 2022 · Read the original
Things to doDenis Island
On private Denis Island in June they found clear water for snorkelling at Belle Etoile, while seaweed hit beaches elsewhere, and wildlife everywhere.
“Fairy terns, magpie robin, giant tortoises and turtles are almost all guaranteed to be spotted while on the island.”
Couple, repeat visitors · Tripadvisor forum · Jun 2022 · Read the original
Things to doLa Digue
Two weeks across three islands, swimming and snorkelling at almost every beach, Anse Source d'Argent included. Currents were only a problem on La Digue's east side, and even there a sheltered rock pool made up for it.
“We swam and snorkelled at Anse Source d’Argent and every beach we visited in fact”
Couple · Tripadvisor forum · Jun 2018 · Read the original
Food & drink
A visitor who comes twice a year says the real Creole cooking is found with local hosts, not hotel buffets: rich, spiced and unlike anywhere else.
“those who have never tried fruit bat curry with breadfruit baked on fire of coconut shells have probably never tasted real local cuisine”
Regular visitor · Tripadvisor forum · Jun 2018 · Read the original
Scenery & beaches
Two weeks in March, and the beaches beat everywhere else this well-travelled couple had been. They had a few very memorable meals too.
“The beaches are the best I've seen and swim in my life”
Couple · Tripadvisor forum · Mar 2018 · Read the original
The bad 5
Crowds & noiseLa Digue
La Digue in August was small, packed with bikes and fast trucks, short on places to eat, and the beaches were too rough to swim. They cut their five nights to two and went back to Mahé.
“When we arrived in La Digue we were very disappointed, the island is very small and very overcrowded.”
Family · Tripadvisor forum · Aug 2022 · Read the original
Getting aroundMahé to Praslin
During the June–July trade winds the fast ferry between Mahé and Praslin is notoriously rough. Fly the short hop instead.
“Cat Cocos is called the vomit comet during this time of year.”
Couple, repeat visitors · Tripadvisor forum · Jun 2022 · Read the original
Touts & scams
They found service poor from top to bottom and some businesses ready to overcharge, though three great places to eat on Mahé and Praslin made up for a lot. Agree prices before you pay for anything.
“remember to check for prices and contracts before paying for any services.”
Tripadvisor forum · Jul 2018 · Read the original
Weather
In late July and early August they picked the side of the island meant to be clear of seaweed and still found it. The water was too murky to snorkel off the beach, and some beaches were closed for rough seas.
“there were still seaweed on the beach and in the water”
Couple · Tripadvisor forum · Jul 2018 · Read the original
Hotel service
Five disappointing days: slow immigration, unfriendly service even at an expensive Praslin hotel, taxis they called a rip-off, and 'nice beaches' too rough to swim.
“the food is terrible, attention is terrible people are rude”
