The good 7
Peace & quietMaiori and Minori
Early March is a different coast: near-empty ferries, quiet Maiori and Minori, restaurants open and lovely weather. Their September trip, by contrast, was 'not to be repeated'.
“On one ferry from Salerno to Maiori we were the only two people onboard”

Peace & quietAtrani
In late September they stayed in Atrani, a five-minute walk from Amalfi but far calmer. They climbed the steps to Ravello and hiked the Path of the Gods, and missed most of the crowds.
“We had a wonderful Amalfi trip in late September, perhaps my favorite of all our trips.”

Getting aroundRavello
They skipped the buses and hired a driver and guide for a day: Vietri sul Mare, lunch in Ravello, pastries in Minori. It wasn't cheap, and they say it was worth it.
“Tourists didn't bother us at all--we just had to pay for the luxury of being driven around.”

Romance & privacyPositano
They asked ahead for the one suite with a private hot tub on a patio over the sea, and got it. A free bottle of Prosecco and a handwritten note from the family owners were waiting. A porter carries bags from the car park, at €10 a piece.
“we requested during the booking process to get the room with the jetted spa on the patio”

Scenery & beachesRavello
A couple who keep going back pick Ravello, high above the sea, as the most romantic base. They also think Positano's Le Sirenuse is worth a splurge for a night or two, but warn that Positano is nearly all stairs.
“Personally I think Ravello is one of the most gorgeous and romantic spots on the Amalfi Coast.”

Things to doPositano to Capri
A small-group boat day from Positano with about ten others: swimming stops in coves, dolphins, and Capri in the middle. They booked months ahead.
“Our Blue Star boat tour was the highlight of our honeymoon.”
Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Aug 2019 · Read the original
WeatherPositano
An off-season honeymoon at the start of November still brought sun, a free upgrade to a suite with its own way down to the beach, and a day trip to Capri.
“We were in Positano from 1st-4th Nov and were blessed with beautiful weather too”
Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Nov 2017 · Read the original
The bad 4
Getting aroundSalerno to Minori
On the local bus to Minori, the first one was too full to board and the next was half an hour late, then an hour of hairpins and hard braking made them sick. A private driver the next day was 'wonderful'.
“Well all the horror stories you hear about that local bus are true.”
Friends · Rick Steves forum · May 2026 · Read the original
Crowds & noisePositano and Amalfi
In peak season they based themselves in Sorrento and only day-tripped into the famous towns, so they faced the crowds for a few hours at a time.
“the crowds in Positano and Amalfi were massive”
Tripadvisor forum · Jun 2024 · Read the original
WeatherSorrento
At the end of May it rained for most of their stay and the ferries were cancelled. They still enjoyed wineries and food, but they plan to go back for the beach holiday they missed.
“It rained most of the time, ferries were cancelled and our beach vacation morphed into something else.”
Couple · Rick Steves forum · May 2024 · Read the original
Getting aroundPositano and Scala
Long-time regulars say they won't return. Even in late April the Amalfi car park was full by noon and taxis were outrageously expensive. After hiking the Path of the Gods they waited hours for a bus with room for them.
“We waited 2 and 1/2 hours for a bus that would let us on.”
