The good 6

  • Things to doRovaniemi

A resort that runs everything for you: husky rides, night snowmobiling and a horse sleigh, then the aurora through their cabin's glass roof.

“when you have the chance to see some aurora from your cabin glass roof, you hit the apex what you can get from Lapland.”

Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Dec 2023 · Read the original

  • Romance & privacyRovaniemi

A cottage with its own sauna at −9 to −12°C, reindeer with lingonberries at a local restaurant, and lit paths that were safe and romantic for late-night walks.

“Me and my wife had travelled to Lapland for our honeymoon, and we were blown away by the beauty of Finland !”

Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Dec 2019 · Read the original

  • Things to doRovaniemi

Cloud spoiled their first night, so they paid for a guided northern-lights photography tour with warm suits included. It found the aurora and was the highlight of their trip. The reindeer ride was underwhelming by comparison.

“Though a bit expensive, the tour is worth every Euro!”

Couple · Tripadvisor forum · Apr 2019 · Read the original

  • Romance & privacyLevi

Three nights in the most secluded igloo on a fellside in Levi, with adjustable beds to line up on the sky. Daylight lasted only 3–4 hours, so they slept by day and watched all night.

“Each of the 3 nights, we were able to experience the aurora, although photos do it no justice.”

Couple · Tripadvisor review · Nov 2017 · Read the original

  • WeatherSaariselkä

Their packing advice: keep gloves, hat and boots in your hand luggage, because you walk across the tarmac at Ivalo, and bring a proper parka and ski trousers. Jeans and city coats don't cut it.

“With negative temperatures you’ll need more than an urban winter jacket to keep you warm”

Couple · Tripadvisor review · Nov 2017 · Read the original

  • Scenery & beachesSaariselkä

A week at a wilderness lodge for their first trip abroad in 14 years: dog sledding (the highlight), snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and two final nights in a glass-roofed cabin with a sauna. Weak wifi was a bonus.

“The scenery is just breathtaking & at times I felt quite emotional.”

Couple · Tripadvisor review · Jan 2016 · Read the original

The bad 4

  • WeatherRovaniemi

On the first night snow covered the glass and they saw nothing. On the second, a clear sky, but reflections on the glass made the aurora look like faint cloud. The colours mostly show up on camera.

“In short you have to be outside to see the real thing”

Tripadvisor review · Oct 2023 · Read the original

  • Where they stayedRovaniemi

They saw the aurora from bed, but when it appeared everyone rushed outside and the igloo entrance lights all came on. Ask for an igloo on the outer edge, and use a local aurora-alert app rather than the hotel's tablet.

“the entrance of other igloos would be automatically lightened up when everyone rushed out to take photos”

Tripadvisor review · Feb 2019 · Read the original

  • Romance & privacyRovaniemi

No aurora at all from their igloo near Rovaniemi. Then staff walked half their tour group through the 'private' igloo in snowy boots, without asking, to show it off.

“We did not see any Aurora there.”

Tripadvisor review · Feb 2018 · Read the original

  • Where they stayedSaariselkä

The world-famous glass igloos were their bucket-list item and a let-down: no shower, so a 10–15 minute walk in the cold to wash. A cheaper, newer glass-roof cabin elsewhere with its own sauna and bathroom was much better.

“The glass igloos are bare-bones with literally a small space to put your luggage, a comfy bed and a tiny bathroom without a shower.”
