The good 5
Where they stayedNigeen Lake, Srinagar
Instead of a Dal Lake houseboat, they stayed at a family-run home on quieter Nigeen Lake, where long conversations with their hosts became the best part of the trip.
“We had a whale of a time at the home”
Couple · Team-BHP forum · May 2023 · Read the original
Scenery & beachesSrinagar and Pahalgam
They timed a late-October trip for the autumn chinars, and the gardens of Srinagar and the Lidder valley at Pahalgam turned red and gold.
“the transition of Chinars from green through crimson to yellow is a sight to behold”
Couple · Team-BHP forum · Oct 2021 · Read the original
Food & drinkSrinagar
Simple things stayed with them: sweet Kashmiri breads at the houseboat, fresh apples from a neighbour in Pahalgam, and spiced coconut from a hawker in Nishat Bagh at sunset.
“We fell in love with the sweet tasting Kashmiri local breads.”

Getting aroundSrinagar
A highly rated local operator supplied a guide-cum-driver who stayed with them all trip. That proved invaluable when roads in Srinagar closed without warning.
“it proved very handy on days of sudden road closures in Srinagar”

Things to doGulmarg
Gulmarg at the end of December was 'simply spectacular'. Take the gondola to Phase 2 first, before the queues build. It's freezing up top, then come down for a snowmobile ride and dum aloo at Phase 1.
“only maybe less 10% of the crowd goes up to phase 2 so it less crowded”
Team-BHP forum · Dec 2018 · Read the original
The bad 5
Value for moneySrinagar
A short trip in May left them calling it 'Cash-mir'. They found Srinagar overrated: a one-hour shikara ride and one Mughal garden are enough, so spend the nights in Gulmarg or Pahalgam.
“everything costs a bit and forced tipping is quite prevalent”
Team-BHP forum · May 2024 · Read the original
Getting around
Each hill town has its own taxi union, so your Srinagar car can't take you around Gulmarg or Pahalgam. That's why they paid about 30% more for a managed private tour.
“you need a separate cab each in Kashmir, Pahalgam, Sonmarg and Gulmarg since every place has their own taxi union”
Couple · Team-BHP forum · Oct 2023 · Read the original
Touts & scamsSonmarg
Anything without a fixed price is inflated. At Sonmarg they were quoted ₹3,500 a horse when the going rate is ₹800–1,700.
“The overcharging and the following negotiations are just a massive drain of time, energy and enthusiasm.”
Couple · Team-BHP forum · Jun 2023 · Read the original
Things to doGulmarg
Their tour operator failed to secure Gulmarg gondola tickets, and they couldn't get any themselves. Book the gondola online yourself, well ahead.
“Our tour operator massively messed up the Gondola tickets”
Couple · Team-BHP forum · Jun 2023 · Read the original
Where they stayedDal Lake, Srinagar
After a night of continuous rain their Dal Lake houseboat lost its water supply, and they had to pack up and move to a neighbouring boat.
“we started having water supply problem since late evening”

- Tipping
- 5–10% in restaurants that don’t add service; small tips for drivers, porters and housekeeping.
