The good 5

  • Where they stayedZermatt

A Matterhorn view from the balcony and from breakfast every morning, plus a pool they used daily. Bring swimwear, and expect a 10-minute uphill walk from the station.

“the breakfast room and entire lobby has an unbelievable view of the Matterhorn”

Couple · Tripadvisor review · Sep 2025 · Read the original

  • Food & drinkZermatt

Waking up to an unobstructed Matterhorn, then the hotel's weekly cheese fondue night: cosy, Swiss, and a highlight of the stay.

“Another highlight was the delicious fondue dinner on Tuesday—a must-try!”

Tripadvisor review · Nov 2024 · Read the original

  • Scenery & beachesRiffelalp, above Zermatt

A hotel up the mountain from Zermatt gave them a closer Matterhorn than the village does, changing with the clouds all day. A porter at Zermatt station sends your bags up ahead.

“It’s an experience just watching it over the days you are there as the clouds roll in and out”

Couple · Tripadvisor review · Jun 2024 · Read the original

  • Scenery & beachesJungfraujoch

On a clear September morning, the train through the tunnels, the ice caves and the walk onto the glacier felt like another planet. They stayed in Wengen and loved it.

“It was otherworldly…different from anything we’d seen or experienced.”

Couple · Rick Steves forum · Jan 2024 · Read the original

  • Things to doWengen and Jungfraujoch

Based in car-free Wengen for five nights, they saved Jungfraujoch for the one clear morning and caught the 7:40 train. Up top they did the ice cave and hot chocolate, then rode the Eiger Express down and the First cable car up for the cliff walk.

“We went on a perfectly clear morning (the only one out of the 6 days we were there).”

Couple · Rick Steves forum · Jun 2023 · Read the original

The bad 4

  • Where they stayedZermatt

Many Swiss mountain hotels have no air conditioning. In July they cooled the room by opening every window, though the Matterhorn from the balcony made up for it.

“My only complaint is no air conditioning in the rooms.”

Couple · Tripadvisor review · Jul 2024 · Read the original

  • Crowds & noiseJungfraujoch

After years of visiting the Bernese Oberland they finally went up: very crowded, with a long train ride in a dark tunnel. If you're short of clear days, they'd pick Männlichen, the Panorama Trail or Schilthorn instead.

“it is extremely EXTREMELY crowded and the long train ride in the dark (no views) was a slog”

Couple, regular visitors · Rick Steves forum · Jan 2024 · Read the original

  • Crowds & noiseKleine Scheidegg

On a sunny day, tour groups jammed the single train up from Kleine Scheidegg, and a promised 30-minute connection became a long wait. They had paid CHF 380 and found the top just as packed.

“We suppose to wait 30 minutes for the connection train and end up waiting 2 1/2 hours!!!”

Family · Tripadvisor review · Apr 2019 · Read the original

  • WeatherJungfraujoch

It's an expensive trip, and the Swiss Travel Pass only takes 25% off the top section. Cloud covered the peak for most of their visit, and they got better views from Schilthorn.

“If it’s cloudy, then the whole trip can be disappointing.”
