The good 8
Food & drinkSnæfellsnes
A country-hotel dinner on Snæfellsnes, a seafood spread after a day of lava caves, a lighthouse and sea cliffs, was a high point.
“the best mussels I’ve ever eaten”
Couple · Rick Steves forum · Sep 2025 · Read the original
Food & drinkVik
They expected little from the food and were won over: lamb stew everywhere, and a pizzeria in Vik they called incredible.
“pretty much everything we ate was good to even great”
Couple · Fodor’s forum · Oct 2024 · Read the original
Romance & privacyHelgafell, Snæfellsnes
A small honesty-box hill on Snæfellsnes with a local tradition: climb in silence without looking back, then make three wishes at the top. They had the 360° view to themselves.
“Once at the top, face east and then silently ask for 3 wishes.”
Friends · Rick Steves forum · Sep 2024 · Read the original
Romance & privacyVik
Midsummer means endless daylight, which they found magical. A fish curry on a rainy evening in Vik was a highlight, though a cup of tea cost about $6.
“We were there on the summer solstice and the never ending day felt magical.”
Couple · Fodor’s forum · Apr 2024 · Read the original
Peace & quietFontana, Laugarvatn
On their fifth trip they skip the Blue Lagoon for smaller geothermal pools and book the first slot of the day: nearly empty, spotless, with a cold plunge into the lake for the brave.
“Our reservation was for when they opened, which has proven to be out favorite time for any lagoon.”
Couple, fifth visit · Rick Steves forum · Aug 2023 · Read the original
Peace & quietRing Road
Eight days on the Ring Road in late May: puffins and terns on the cliffs, moss-covered lava, and almost nobody around. Hotels cost $80–160 a night with breakfast.
“We did not experience many crowds in late May.”
Couple · Fodor’s forum · May 2019 · Read the original
Scenery & beachesEast Fjords
In July the roads were empty almost all the time. Leave Route 1 in the east to drive the fjords, which they liked even more than the famous south coast. Watch for speed cameras in the tunnels.
“In my opinion eastern fjords are even prettier that the southern coast.”
Couple · Tripadvisor review · Jun 2017 · Read the original
Things to doRing Road
They drove the whole Ring Road in eight days at the turn of August and September, with a detour to the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and caught the northern lights in the north.
“we saw the northern lights in the north 2 nights in a row.”
Couple · Tripadvisor review · Sep 2016 · Read the original
The bad 7
Value for money
They logged real prices: about $41 for a hotel breakfast for two, $56 for two bowls of soup, and $23 for coffee and pastries. They saved money by making some of their own lunches.
“We ate several lunches using bread and peanut butter.”
Couple · Rick Steves forum · Sep 2025 · Read the original
WeatherReykjavik
Even in July, most of their days were grey and wet, with only one fully sunny day on their trip round the island.
“It was dreary and raining, what we had come to expect in Iceland.”
Couple · Rick Steves forum · Jul 2024 · Read the original
Getting aroundRing Road
Driving was tricky: narrow raised roads, sheep and birds on the tarmac, and thick fog in which they passed a car that had gone off the road into water.
“Main road is often narrow, built up, and without guard rails.”
Couple · Fodor’s forum · May 2019 · Read the original
HealthBlue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon felt overhyped, with no shampoo or moisturiser for the price. Then a meal there gave them food poisoning, and the lagoon refused to cover the hospital bill.
“My boyfriend and I ended up with a $1,000 hospital bill and 2 out of our 4 days in Reykjavik completely down the drain”
Couple · Tripadvisor review · Feb 2018 · Read the original
Weather
Plan loosely: two of the three tours they had booked for a five-day stay were called off.
“originally had 3 tours scheduled but 2 got cancelled due to weather and volcanic activity”
Fodor’s forum · Jun 2017 · Read the original
Weather
In February they got 6°C grey drizzle, cloud that hid any aurora, crowds and high prices. They warn that cloud can sit for weeks, and suggest northern Norway for the lights.
“I didn't find it romantic at all, just dank and dismal.”
Couple · Fodor’s forum · Feb 2017 · Read the original
Crowds & noiseBlue Lagoon
A long queue, mixed-up robes, and a lagoon so packed on a wet, windy afternoon that it stopped being relaxing.
“very long line, packed like sardines in a can”
