The good 8
Scenery & beachesJardin Majorelle
Staying in a medina riad, they enjoyed it and made their own way to the Majorelle garden.
“We did our own jaunt to the Jardin Majorelle which was beautiful.”

No hassleJemaa el-Fna and the souks
Braced by horror stories, this British couple went into the medina four times, by day and by night. Vendors tried their luck, but with no touching and no abuse. Ignoring the food-stall touts worked, and haggling in the souks became part of the fun.
“In reality, we both felt really safe and comfortable.”

Things to doOurika Valley
Their riad manager arranged trips by the next day, including a drive through villages to the Ourika waterfalls with a short trek at the end. Prices are negotiated.
“Once, we went by car with two guys to the Ourika waterfalls, stopping in villages and then trekking for a final part. It was quite nice.”
Rick Steves forum · Jul 2025 · Read the original
Romance & privacyMedina, near Bahia Palace
A restored riad near the Bahia Palace on a big anniversary trip. Staff briefed them on the city and booked trips and taxis, and the riad was the highlight of their time in Morocco.
“the stay was so good it felt like a second honeymoon”
Couple, wedding anniversary · Tripadvisor review · Mar 2025 · Read the original
Local peopleMedina
Eight days in an 18th-century riad. They felt safe throughout, and the only danger was the mopeds in the lanes. Their advice: 4–5 days is enough.
“the Moroccan people to be genuinely warm and welcoming”
Couple · Fodor’s forum · Feb 2025 · Read the original
No hassleMedina
First time in the souks, they set out with a map and a list of fair prices from their riad. A warm rooftop pool waited after afternoons of haggling, and staff opened their own wine for an evening drink.
“sent us out on the first day with a detailed map and directions, as well as tips on where to visit and what we should expect to pay for things”
Couple · Tripadvisor review · Nov 2024 · Read the original
Where they stayedMedina
A quiet riad on a small street, still walkable to the medina. After hot days, they relaxed by the small indoor pool and on rooftop corners under the stars.
“they made the first days of our honeymoon unforgettable”
Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Apr 2019 · Read the original
Things to doErg Chigaga, Sahara
Instead of a crowded one-night camp near Merzouga, they drove over the Atlas to a small camp two hours off-road in the Sahara, with camel rides, an oasis picnic and a Berber family visit. They flew back north from Zagora to save a long drive.
“very isolated (a 2 hour off road drive across the desert)”
Couple · Fodor’s forum · Apr 2019 · Read the original
The bad 6
Touts & scamsJemaa el-Fna
In autumn 2025, half of the main square was dug up for repairs.
“Half of the main square was being torn up at that time and being repaired.”
Rick Steves forum · Nov 2025 · Read the original
WeatherOutside the city
In 35°C-plus heat they chose an all-inclusive with pools outside the city, partly to have somewhere to retreat to from the medina.
“Mostly for the pools in this 35°+ heat”
Couple · Tripadvisor forum · Sep 2025 · Read the original
Getting aroundMarrakech airport
Leaving takes a long time: check-in is mandatory even with online boarding passes, and passport control comes twice. Arrive three hours before your flight.
“We counted no fewer than 7 different lines we had to navigate before boarding our plane.”
Couple · Fodor’s forum · Feb 2025 · Read the original
Touts & scamsMedina
Be wary of friendly strangers offering directions or a 'once-a-week Berber market'. It's a lure. Say no thanks and keep walking, even if you're lost.
“When walking through the alleys you will be met by seemingly helpful locals just wanting to offer advice or bring you somewhere special.”
Tripadvisor review · May 2017 · Read the original
Touts & scamsMedina
Four nights in a medina riad meant passing the same tricksters daily: 'the alley's a dead end', 'the road is closed', 'I work at your riad'. One man demanded €100 after misdirecting them and backed off only when they shouted for police.
“One guy tried to threaten us for 100 euros after he lied to us about the place we asked!”
Couple · Tripadvisor review · Mar 2017 · Read the original
Crowds & noiseMedina
In midsummer the souks were packed and sweltering, and anyone who helped with directions wanted a tip.
“Too crowded and too busy on a hot day.”
