The good 5
Scenery & beachesMunnar Royal View bus
For their 20th anniversary they rode the state bus company's open double-decker through the tea estates in the evening, front row upstairs, booked two months ahead. They rated it the best way to take in the scenery without driving.
“This is a 3 hour service that takes you through lush plantations, waterfalls and beautiful roads where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the view.”

CultureMunnar town
On their first evening they caught a back-to-back Kathakali and Kalaripayattu show, with real weapons and fire stunts, and came out amazed.
“We went with no expectations and my-oh-my”

Where they stayedTea estate near Mattupetty
A tea-estate bungalow with home-style meals, birdsong all day and chats with the tea pickers. Their only regret was not staying longer than two nights.
“We felt the two nights’ stay was a wrong decision and should have just stayed for a couple of more nights.”

Things to doKolukkumalai
A 4:30 am jeep up to Kolukkumalai for sunrise over the peaks, with cups of strong black tea at the top. Their verdict on whether the early start is worth it was a clear yes.
“Is it worth waking up at 3:30AM and taking the treacherous ride, just to witness the sun rise up behind the mountains? YES.”

Things to doEravikulam National Park
At Eravikulam a shuttle bus and a short uphill walk bring you close to Nilgiri tahr grazing on the grassland. On a weekday they bought tickets at the gate without much of a queue.
“They are accustomed to the human traffic around them and go about grazing without a worry.”

The bad 5
Getting aroundMunnar
Driving back to their resort on a rainy night they found the roads very steep and narrow, with tight hairpins, and missed a few turns. Try to arrive in daylight.
“Only now we realised how narrow and steep Munnar roads are.”

Getting aroundKolukkumalai
The jeep track up to Kolukkumalai is mud, stones and ruts, and the hour each way is rough on the back.
“The next 1 hour was a back breaking ride and both of us held on tightly to our seats.”

Scenery & beachesAround Munnar
On a return visit four years later, they found the roads widened and much of the shade from tall roadside trees gone.
“These super-wide roads maybe a bliss for travelers like us but they have come at a huge cost - green cover.”

WeatherEravikulam National Park
In the dry season Eravikulam was hot at the bottom and the hills were bare. The grassland fills with Kurinji flowers only in bloom season.
“Right now, it was just dry grassland and a bald Anamudi peak as a view.”

Hotel serviceChinnakanal
Their resort near Chinnakanal, about 20 km from town, was short-staffed after Covid. The staff tried hard, but service sometimes slipped.
“Staffs were very good but service can be lacking at times.”
