The good 5
Where they stayedCoonoor
A couple on their 20th-anniversary road trip stayed in a 150–200-year-old colonial property in Coonoor, now a modern resort. They loved the lawns, the Victorian rooms and the bonfire evenings.
“We felt like royalty upon check in and enjoyed our evening cocktail hours after the long drive.”

Food & drinkCoonoor
Coonoor's Church Road area has branches of most of the hills' favourite eateries. Their pick for local non-veg cooking was one they'd return to every night.
“If you had one restaurant in Coonoor you should keep going back to, it would be Ramachandra.”

Scenery & beachesKotagiri road
They took the road down via Kotagiri to Mettupalayam and found it scenic, smooth and nearly empty.
“The Ooty-Kotagiri-Mettupalayam route is very scenic and roads are amazing smooth.”

WeatherOoty
Even in late April it was about 7°C at night, and their room's fireplace burned all night. It felt more like a winter break.
“Was ~7 degree centigrade on April 30 and we had to keep the fireplace in the room burning the entire night.”

Things to doNilgiri Mountain Railway
For their 10th anniversary they took the toy train from Ooty down to Coonoor on a clear morning, then toured a tea factory and walked through the estate.
“It was a clear, fine morning and the views were awesome.”

The bad 4
Crowds & noiseCoonoor
Heavy traffic around Bedford Circle in Coonoor spoiled their evening stroll, and Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose were crowded.
“Just too many cars and trucks to kill the joy of a relaxed walk around Bedford Circle.”
Couple, 20th anniversary · Team-BHP forum · Sep 2026 · Read the original
Getting aroundAvalanche Lake
The last 6 km to Avalanche Lake is a broken forest road, mostly in first gear, with taxis that won't give way. Up close, you can only see the lake from where the forest guards allow.
“The next 3 kms was horrible. I could not get past 1st gear.”

Things to doNilgiri Mountain Railway
In the summer holidays one visitor couldn't get toy-train seats because of overbooking, and two of their three days were rainy.
“I wasn't able to get to the train ride because of over bookings during the summer vacations”

Crowds & noiseOoty Lake
On a holiday, Ooty Lake felt like a bazaar: packed with people, with traffic in a mess. Without the crowds, it would be lovely.
“It's a bazaar- overcrowded, traffic is a mess and it simply doesn't make sense to spend your hard earned holiday on visiting this site.”
