The good 8
Food & drinkGonikoppal
A couple on their 20th-anniversary road trip had Coorgi pork curry with akki roti in Gonikoppal and were still talking about it at the end of the trip. Later, a roastery near Virajpet served coffee with jaggery.
“The food was a superhit and right upto the end of our trip, we remembered the legendary taste of this dish.”

Scenery & beachesNagarhole
Driving in through Nagarhole forest, they passed deer and elephant families beside the road.
“We spotted multiple herds of deer and elephant families just going about their day as we passed through the roads.”

CultureNamdroling Monastery and Madikeri
They loved the calm of the main hall at Namdroling, the Tibetan monastery about two hours from Virajpet. They found Madikeri cooler and more of a hill station than the south, and would base themselves there next time.
“we think one should pick the Madikeri one for temperature and vibe”

Where they stayedSouth Coorg
A weekend at a homestay among coffee plantations in south Coorg: a room with a swing, birdsong and crickets.
“After reaching the property, we were allotted our room, and boy oh boy, it was worth every penny that we paid.”

Scenery & beachesNagarhole
The winding road in through Nagarhole tiger reserve was a highlight of the drive, with plenty of speed breakers and wildlife stops.
“We spotted herds of chital deer and troops of langurs.”

Where they stayedNear Virajpet
A plantation resort where their villa looked over coffee bushes on one side and a lake on the other. The staff, down to the naturalist, made the stay.
“The villas were beautiful with tastefully created furniture and overlooked a coffee plantation on one side and a lake on the other.”

Things to doMandalpatti
Their Madikeri homestay arranged a 5 am 4x4 jeep up Mandalpatti for sunrise. The track was brutal and they were told not to eat first, but the views from the top were worth it.
“It was one hell of a ride. But the views were amazing.”

Peace & quietAbbey Falls
Visiting Abbey Falls on a very rainy September day spared them the usual crowds, and the monsoon meant much more water.
“We visited in September on a very rainy day so thankfully we were spared the horde of tourists who otherwise throng this place.”

The bad 8
Getting aroundNear Virajpet
The last few kilometres to their big resort near Virajpet were broken and flooded. After a quiet homestay, the busy resort with constant check-ins was a shock.
“It was broken, hap hazard and flooded for the entire 3-4 kms once we left the highway.”

Value for moneyRoad from Namdroling Monastery
They stopped at roadside spice shops on the way back from the monastery despite knowing better, and paid far over the odds for pepper and chocolate.
“On the way back there are some tourist trap spice shops.”

Things to doNagarhole
In the dry summer they hoped to see elephants in Nagarhole, but saw none.
“Both my wife and I badly wanted to see a herd of elephants or even one or two may be, but we could not spot any of them.”
Family · Team-BHP forum · Jun 2025 · Read the original
Food & drinkSouth Coorg
There's nowhere to eat on the stretch after Nagarhole. They ended up cooking instant noodles on a camping stove in their room.
“On the way after Nagarhole, we did not find any restaurants at all, which left us starving.”

Getting aroundBangalore to Madikeri
Following phone navigation from Bangalore sent them on diversions and village roads, and the trip took about five and a half hours.
“You simply cannot trust Google.”

Where they stayedResort near Pollibetta
A couple booked the honeymoon suite for its view. The kitchen exhaust next to the room ran most of the day, and the manager's only offer was a move to a lower room category.
“If u looking for some peace in your holiday , DO NOT book the honeymoon suite !!”

Crowds & noiseRaja's Seat, Madikeri
Raja's Seat in Madikeri has a lovely valley view and a tidy garden, but it draws picnic crowds.
“It is well maintained and well crowded.”

Things to doAbbey Falls
Abbey Falls is pretty rather than dramatic, and the steps down are steep and slippery.
“The waterfall itself is beautiful but not spectacular.”
