The good 3
Things to doArenal
Even on a trip they found disappointing overall, the wildlife delivered: sloths, frogs, monkeys and crocodiles, with very good nature guides.
“I wanted to see Sloths and there are a lot of them!”
Family · Tripadvisor forum · Feb 2024 · Read the original
Local people
Skipping party towns for small eco-lodges and private reserves paid off: friendly people, knowledgeable nature guides, and better English than they had found elsewhere on their travels.
“we loved CR in our first trip so much that we will return next summer”
Couple · Tripadvisor forum · Jan 2024 · Read the original
Things to doManuel Antonio
A wildlife honeymoon through Tortuguero, Drake Bay and Manuel Antonio. Their hotel grounds were full of animals, and the national park's beach had sloths and iguanas.
“we had monkeys on our balcony nearly every day, a Sloth at the pool”
Couple · Tripadvisor forum · Jul 2023 · Read the original
The bad 4
WeatherArenal
Two nights at a lodge facing the Arenal volcano, and cloud and rain hid it the whole time.
“we just got unlucky and never saw the volcano due to clouds and rain”
Family · Tripadvisor forum · Feb 2024 · Read the original
Value for money
Prices for hotels, tours and food matched the US or Europe, but the roads and facilities did not.
“First world prices, third world amenities”
Family · Tripadvisor forum · Feb 2024 · Read the original
Where they stayedManuel Antonio
After nearly three hours of winding roads, they learned their booking-site reservation in Manuel Antonio, their second one, had been dropped, and ended up in Jacó. Book direct with the hotel.
“That was the second reservation they did not honor”
Family · Tripadvisor forum · Feb 2024 · Read the original
Getting around
Ten days that this couple didn't enjoy. Getting around meant a hire car, with long drives on narrow, potholed roads and dirt tracks, and roadside crosses everywhere.
“I’ve driven in lots of countries and never felt as nervous as I did in CR.”
