The good 5

  • Things to doIsland tour

Ten days round the island (Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Yala and the south coast) with a private driver-guide who sorted tickets and local food. He even helped stage a surprise birthday picnic at a waterfall.

“He helped to my wife orgonise a bday party at Dijaluma falls, what was totally unbelivable and an unfogettable memory for us.”

  • Where they stayedGalle Fort

A heritage boutique hotel inside the Galle Fort walls set up their suite for a honeymoon, with Sri Lankan breakfasts and a small gift for the bride.

“the hotel is really luxurious, cozy, and heritage boutique”

  • Value for moneyColombo to Mirissa

Sixteen days on honeymoon with a hired driver for $20–50 a day. He was guide, fixer and friend, and booked trips at local prices. Self-drive offers turned out to be scams.

    “ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT.”

Honeymooners · Tripadvisor forum · Feb 2022 · Read the original

  • Where they stayedSigiriya

Large private villas and a pool facing Lion Rock. One couple wrote in mid-honeymoon to recommend it, and another found it more romantic than the bigger-name resort nearby.

“We are currently on our honeymoon in Sri Lanka and are staying at Water Garden Sigiriya.”

  • Romance & privacyUnawatuna

For a quiet end to the trip, a small hillside property above Unawatuna Bay with sweeping views, a garden suite with a plunge pool, and the beach six minutes' walk away.

“Quiet. Romantic. Garden setting. Sweeping views.”

The bad 4

  • Touts & scamsColombo

A tuk-tuk driver offering 'free petrol' delivered them to a gem shop that ran a high-pressure sale and charged NZ$7,400 to a card. It's a known Colombo scam: never go to shops a driver suggests.

“Tuk-tuk drivers receiving commissions for bringing tourists to specific shops”

Mother and son · Tripadvisor review · Jan 2025 · Read the original

  • Value for money

Their booked tour owner never turned up and subcontracted a driver, who steered them to overpriced restaurants and spice gardens and charged $153 for a $100 safari. Hire your own driver at about $40–45 a day and book excursions yourself.

“He was trying to make stops in all the places that are defined as tourist scams in Sri Lanka”

Couple · Tripadvisor review · Mar 2024 · Read the original

  • Touts & scams

The same honeymoon report was blunt about touts near the tourist sights: assume anyone who approaches you wants something.

    “Scamming: Absolutely horrible.”

Honeymooners · Tripadvisor forum · Feb 2022 · Read the original

  • Scenery & beachesGalle

A beachfront resort with an ocean view from every room, but the surf on that stretch was too rough to swim in. Check the sea, not just the photos.
