The good 7
Where they stayedMotu resort
They chose an overwater bungalow with a plunge pool facing Mount Otemanu, and say paying for the mountain view was worth it. Through the glass floor they woke to turquoise water every morning.
“we stayed in an over water bungalow with a pool facing the mountain (IT'S WORTH IT!!)”

Romance & privacyMotu resort
Their tips: one night of room service on the deck under the stars, and a half-day lagoon cruise for the coral gardens, sharks and rays. Bring wine from a supermarket in Tahiti, because the resort is cut off from shops.
“spend at least one night ordering room service on your deck and watching the stars. It’s magical!”
Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Aug 2025 · Read the original
Value for moneyMotu resort
One of the more affordable overwater bungalows on the island, and they never felt short-changed: staff treated them 'like royalty' and they're already planning their tenth anniversary there.
“Food prices were fair for the area and everything was delicious.”
Honeymooners · Tripadvisor review · Aug 2025 · Read the original
Food & drinkMatira, main island
A dinner out at a small restaurant on the main island, with a taxi there and back included, was expensive and worth every franc. Food anywhere on Bora Bora costs a lot.
“We were fully prepared to pay whatever we needed to for the experience & do not regret that we did.”
Couple · Tripadvisor review · Sep 2024 · Read the original
Things to doMotu resort
Three nights in one of the four bungalows furthest out over the lagoon, with nothing between them and Otemanu. They rated the shark-and-ray snorkelling trip highly, and the lagoon is calm enough to snorkel easily.
“everything conspired in providing us with an incredible romantic setting”
Couple · Tripadvisor review · Sep 2023 · Read the original
Food & drinkMatira, main island
Staying on the main island instead of a motu means restaurants and food trucks within walking distance and a $50 scooter for a lap of the island. Fish come to feed under the bungalow's glass table.
“The best meals we had were outside the resort”
Couple · Tripadvisor review · Sep 2020 · Read the original
Weather
They had a small wedding to afford the trip and went in November because it was cheaper, accepting the risk of rain. It rained for a few hours on one day.
“We went November because it is cheaper but more chances of rain(we got lucky it only rained for 1 day and lasted a few hours)”

The bad 3
Value for moneyMotu resort
The room was dreamy, but the resort food was a let-down for the price compared with the Maldives, and the snorkelling off the beach was limited, so book a reef tour.
“We tried all the restaurants at the resort, which were all fine but nothing special given the premium prices.”
Couple · Tripadvisor review · Mar 2025 · Read the original
Hotel serviceMotu resort
At about $4,300 a night they waited 45 minutes for breakfast orders that sometimes never came, in a dark, crowded room with no ocean view, and they gave up on the coffee. A $300-a-night hotel on Tahiti did breakfast better.
“highly recommend avoiding the Four Seasons Bora Bora”
Couple · Tripadvisor review · Aug 2024 · Read the original
Hotel serviceMotu resort
A gay couple on honeymoon were repeatedly called 'Mrs.' by the office staff despite correcting them. Their honeymoon went unacknowledged until they asked, and they had to carry their own bags to the pier.
“we were repeatedly referred to as "Mrs." in both written correspondence and phone interactions”

Good to know before you book Bora Bora

Plugs, tipping, water and phones in French Polynesia
- Plugs and voltage
- Type A, B, E (varies by hotel; bring a universal adapter) · 220 V / 60 Hz
- Tap water
- Depends where. Generally treated on Tahiti and Moorea; resorts on the outer islands filter water or serve bottled.
- Tipping
- Not expected and not part of local custom; a small gift or thanks is appreciated.
- Phone and eSIM
- Vini is the main network. Coverage is patchy on outer atolls; eSIM roaming is expensive, so check your plan.
- Money (XPF)
- Pacific franc (XPF), fixed to the euro. Prices are high; most resorts take cards.
- Emergency numbers
- 112 · Ambulance (SAMU) 15 · Police 17 · Fire 18
