The good 4
Things to doPico
A whale-watching zodiac out of Lajes do Pico found three sperm whales and Risso's dolphins, with Pico mountain behind. Sit at the stern if you have a bad back: the swell was big.
“We saw 3 sperm whales and a number of risso dolphins along with some great views of Pico Island and the mountain from the sea.”

CultureTerceira
The UNESCO-listed town of Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira was their favourite: a good museum, trails on Monte Brasil and colourful chapels. They finished with a quiet cottage next to a forest reserve.
“The UNESCO designated city of Angra do Heroismo was our favourite city in the Azores”

Romance & privacySão Miguel
A swim where hot springs meet cold Atlantic waves at Ferraria, then sunset drinks on a clifftop spa terrace, and another day they couldn't tear themselves away from the crater lake of Lagoa do Fogo.
“We found it hard to leave that beautiful spot.”
Couple · Fodor’s forum · Apr 2024 · Read the original
Things to doSão Jorge
Two-time visitors loved hiking the ridge of São Jorge in sunshine, and still go back for the simple fresh fish at a busy beach bar on São Miguel.
“absolutely loved the spine walk on St Jorge island, we had sunny weather and the views were amazing”

The bad 4
WeatherSete Cidades
Seventeen days on São Miguel taught them the forecast can't be trusted for the crater views. If Sete Cidades is fogged in, switch to Furnas, where visibility doesn't matter.
“Sete Cidades is one of the worst places for fog in Sao Miguel”
Tripadvisor forum · Oct 2024 · Read the original
Getting aroundPico
Inter-island flights depend on the weather: a returning couple got stuck on Pico an extra night when it turned bad. Leave slack in an island-hopping plan.
“You definitely have to be flexible with the weather.”

Food & drinkNordeste
A remote nature hotel in the Nordeste had a great pool, spa and view, but no extras in the rooms, and the worst dinner of their ten-day stay.
“Dinner was worst meal we’ve had in our ten day stay.”
Family · Tripadvisor review · Dec 2023 · Read the original
WeatherSete Cidades
On a sunny day elsewhere they reached Sete Cidades to find the caldera hidden in fog. They went to the coast and came back when it lifted.
“we were disappointed to arrive finding the entire caldera shrouded in fog”
